Rediscovering a World of Color

Embellish has been a Davines Multispace Salon for 6 plus years.  This means that we've offered Tacoma the best color experience possible for over half a decade!! In in effort to refresh and exercise our color brains and to gain some new insight on up and coming color techniques, we made a trek up to Salon Services in Renton to experience a fantastic Davines color class followed by the introduction of a new color collection created by one of Davines' finest artistic minds.

This collection, Inner Window, was inspired by the pallet that is created when hair catches the sun at different times of the day and how it makes you feel. It's a collection designed to be worn by today's woman, simple and ellegant cuts brought to life by amazing color placements. Designed to be worn curly and straight, this collection emphasizes the importance of versitile color placement and cutting techniques.

Inner Window 1
It's early morning. You're sitting in your favorite chair eating the most delicious breakfast. In through the window peaks the morning's first light and your hair catches rays beaming from the radiant morning light. This light and reflection inspired this first look. Kissed with color from the Mask gold series with highlights enhanced with toners in the L'Art Decolor line, we love this look for it's fresh morning inspiration!!

Inner Window 2
Afternoon has come and gone and it's almost dinner time. The sun is creeping back over the horizin and the air is cooling. This look, with its virbrant reds and copper undertones reflects the blended colors of the dusk sky. With a base in the Mask Red series and accented with copper and mahogany, this look inspires us to use more of the fabulous reds in the Mask color line.

Inner Window 3
Happy Hour is always good time!! Drinks and yummy appetizers, convo with old friends or new friends just made.... This look is radiates with colors from the early night's sky. With a base in the Natural Warm series and beige/bold hightlights just a touch lighter, this look has renewed an interest in enhancing natural tones by using techniques that optimize natural pigment.

Let's Make Those Eyes Sparkle!!!

It is amazing how much a clean eyebrow shape opens up the face and makes the eyes sparkle and waxing is a quick way to clean up those pesky hairs that take FOREVER to pluck. Waxing also picks up some of the more invisible hairs that are impossible to pluck making for a cleaner makeup application and a fresh look to the brow line.

As a gift to you for booking an appointment for today, we'd like to add on a complimentary eyebrow wax to your service. Heather, a genius with wax, has a few openings today so call now cause she's filling up quick!! (253) 752-8144

Terry Dean is On the Scene

A few summers ago, a gentleman walked into Embellish and politely asked if we were opposed to him sitting outside of our entry way and playing his guitar. Though the receptionist at the time was new she replied simply with, "Sure.... Why not?" and he proceeded to do so, serenading the remaining clients of the day. As the sun set for the day, he reentered the salon with a very tall friend who politely asked, "Would you guys mind if I sang you a song?". With no objection by clients and Daymakers alike, the very tall gentleman began to pluck away at his guitar leaving the salon and all of its inhabitants speechless and in awe. These were two very talented men of which were invited to come back and play for us any time they wanted to.

It's been a while since these gentlemen, one of which you may know as Terry Dean Rickert, last graced our presence but we're excited to hear that they will be tearin' up the Tacoma scene and jammin' at Jazzbones on the 28th of this month. Who knows... maybe we'll be able to get the guys to sing a song just for the Embellish crew.

The Matador Tacoma

In a search for a place to have our next team outing, we were presented with the idea of going to The Matador. This time there will be no antlers or horns involved but rest assured we will be taking part in one of Tacoma's finest happy hours!! Clients can't rave enough about the delicious treats their skilled chefs have to offer with a wide selection of the finest tequilas, we're bound to be in for a fantastic adventure.

Upon entering, you're invited into a smooth, comfortable atmosphere. With a unique blend of custom iron work, fantastic wood working and antique light fixtures, you're in for a aesthetically pleasing and industrial design pallet whose fires warm the heart and appease the soul.

We haven't made a final decision yet but we're leaning towards a comfy and appetizing atmosphere and The Matador is at the top of our list!!!

We're Doing Our Part By Supporting a Direct Effort

There are amazing people who are doing wonderful things to help those in need.  We at Embellish were touched by the story of one man, Greg Bennick, who is going above and beyond to help those who are in need in Haiti. He has 10,000 lbs of rice in a warehouse in Little Rock that needs to be shipped to Miami in order to get to Haiti. UPS is ready to ship it. The Liberty Schooner has agreed to bring it to Haiti. He also has ground support set up in Haiti to distribute it. He has stated that if each one of his friends on Facebook donated $2 that he would have enough to ship his goods to the people of Haiti. Check out his blog for more info about his story, how he was inspired and what he is doing to make sure to ease the suffering of those who were struck by and are still dealing with the aftermath of such a tragic event.

Learn to Speak Stylist Jargon!!

Have you ever sat in a styling chair and felt like your stylist was speaking a foreign language or you couldn't quite express what it is you wanted your hair to look like? Well, here are some helpful hints to ensure that you leave Embellish with exactly what you want!!

Tip #1- PICTURES!!!
It is very helpful to bring pictures of what you want whether it's referring to color or cut. This ensures that you and your stylist are on the same page and can also be a point of reference for return visits. We have a filing system here that allows us to keep your pictures here and we love being able to point to a picture and say things like, "Is this what you mean by texture?" or "This bang would look great on you!!". It also allows you to say "this is what I want" without trying to make an attempt at a language that we use every day.

Tip #2- Understanding Stylist Jargon
If you're unable to find a picture of what you want, are just looking for a little bit of a change or just would like to express the things that you like in a haircut, it's important that both you and your stylist are on the same page. Here are some terms that will help you and your stylist communicate what you want in a haircut.

Beachy- Hair that's a bit wavy, with a wind tousled finish; often created with a thickening or saltwater based spray gel. Products that would help you to accomplish this look are Kevin Murphy's Hair Resort, Sachajuan's Ocean Mist or Davines' Finest Oil Non Oil
Choppy- A cut which the ends all vary slightly in length; stylists often use a razor to achieve this effect. This look can also be accomplished with varying shear techniques. Be aware that you may not be able to see your choppiness without the help of products like Kevin Murphy's Sticky Business, any of the pots in Davines' For Wizards Line and Sachajuan's Hair Wax or Hair Paste.
Giving Hair Movement- Usually involves adding layers from mid-length to ends, making the style feel lighter and bouncier. It is important that you ask you stylist their recommendation for how your layers should lay as everyone has a different face shape. The idea is to create layers that accentuate the best features of your face shape and bring attention to the sparkle in your eye, the cute shape of your nose or the amazing shape of your cheek bones.
Overdirecting- Blowing out the hair to one side, then flipping in to part it on the other side for added volume. This is a technique we use often refered to as "the wrap dry"
Piecey- Ends are defined and separated, generally on shorter cuts; the stylist applies a wax, gel or pomade to the hair, then uses her fingers to break up the texture of the hair. Products you could use to create this type of style are Davines' Glossy Modeling Putty, Kevin Murphy's Easy Rider to separate curls and Sachajuan's Styling Gel.
Structure- Characteristics of a defined, often geometric style like a bob. This term could also be used to describe the end result of techniques used to help you achieve your finished look. For example, someone with fine hair might need texturizing done in the internal structure to help create volume.
Texturizing- Either making very curly hair smoother and less bulky by cutting diagonally into it, or making flat hair appear fuller and lifted with layers.
Thinning Out- Removing bulk from hair, usually by gliding a razor/shears or by using thinning shears. Be sure that you express which methods you are most comfortable with. For example, anyone with curly hair should request that their curls be "carved".
Hint #3- Commit to Meeting Us Half Way
Your relationship with your stylist can only be described as a 50:50 hair affair. As stylists we are determined to give you the best haircut, style or color we are capable of but without a collaboration, it is hard to achieve complete success. We need you as clients to commit to doing the work as far as at home care. Using the recommended products and keeping your styling promises are the best way for you to hold up your end of the bargain. This means making sure you hair is completely dry before flat ironing or using that heat protectant before using any hot tools. This also means making sure you make it in for your maintenance appointments and keeping with the color/cut schedule that your stylist recommends. We ask you to do these things so that we as a collaborative effort are able to ensure that your hair is looking its absolute best at all times. We also want to make sure that after your haircut implodes after 6-8 weeks that you're not cursing us because your hair is not doing what you want it to do!! Ha!! Let's do our best to keep the fireworks to a minimum!!

Now, take these hints and study hard, memorize, post them on your wall, make them into a song.... do what you have to do so that you don't forget!!! If you do somehow fail to commit these to memory, please remember that you can always ask as many questions as you feel necessary. Our goal is to make sure that your experience is as enjoyable as possible and the best way to ensure that is executing the style and haircut that you most desire.
