Dance takedown with Friendly Fires

My spotify, cd player, and YouTube have been abuzz with my new music obsession -- FRIENDLY FIRES, electronic dance funk shoegaze. You can dance to these tracks as well as relate to the prolific lyrics. In one of my favorite tracks, "Skeleton Boy," Ed McFarlane writes about a break up, keeping the good memories, and leaving the bad relationship.
"your too much , i take it that we're over, or should we even care at all, you're too much lets shake hands and say goodbye, your love is out believing despite the loss, give me your hand lets face this night and see it through"
Meeting in the year 1989, the UK trio Ed McFarlane, Jack Savidge, and Edd Gibson began as a hardcore punk cover band, staying together until university and taking a break. They reunited after graduating and rose to become chart toppers with TV perfomances on some of UKs top channels. A large break happened for the band when they were featured on Ninetendo and Playstation games in 2007. In 2008 the band finally released their self titled album and magic was made readily available to the masses!!
I love this band, their energy, beats, and lyrics -- it's meaningful, beautiful, and dancetastic all at the same time.
I hope you enjoy these guys as much as I do. Do yourself a huge musical favor and find Friendly Fires on Spotify, Google or YouTube -- delve into some more tracks (Lovesick being a HUUGGGE suggestion lol) I think you will be very pleased.

HOLY HOLY HOLY....HOLY GHOST!!!

Its New Music Mondays..... This weeks pick is a New York based band called HOLY GHOST! The band was formed in 2007 by childhood best friends Alex Frankel and Nick Millhiser. My best friend, Del Brown, and I recently attended one of their shows in Portland , and met up with Frankel.
Having met him about a year ago, it was a fun reunion; the show was even more amazing. We chatted with Alex about the record especially about our favorite track, "Some Children,  " featuring another favorite artist of ours, Michael McDonald (formerly of the doobie brothers.) Alex told a super funny story.
When playing the track for his producer, James Murphy (LCD Soundsystem,) they both thought that they needed someone else to sing the hook, Murphy quickly suggested Justin Timberlake; Frankel snickered to us, took a drink of his glass full of bourbon and said, "I laughed at James while saying, 'If you can get him for it, but dont you think he is a little famous?'" Frankel then suggested McDonald, and they emailed him the track. McDonald replied, "I think I already know what you want me to sing on your track!"
We spent a few more moment with Frankel drinking, laughing, singing, and dancing. HOLY GHOST! A true mix of hip hop , electropop, and funk - with a dash of rock and roll. Check this band out if you wanna dance......REAL HARD

Plaid: It's Not Just Grunge Anymore

Stepping out this morning, the first thing I saw was my breath. These days make me yearn for warm items. I like to turn to plaid. The rich hues and deep colors create a sense of snuggly delight, but I want to stay on trend - I've decided to stop living in the '90s.

The Fall/Winter collections were FULL of plaid. The tartan was turned into sweaters, pants, scarves, and so much more. This year even saw a wrap-around dress made of delicious plum themed plaid. And there were some classically silhouetted dresses perked up by the always fun plaid. And, of course, lovely thick coats to wrap around and ward off the cold winds.

So, while we here in the Pacific Northwest have been famous for our love of all things plaid, we can join with the rest of the world and put a trend-setting, fashion forward spin to it. Check out millionlooks.com for some inspiration.

Take a look in some local shops, VanityMegs & Mo, or anyone of the Shopgirls of Tacoma to see what pieces you just need to add to your wardrobe for the season.

Music, Hair, Passion and Fashion!

There are few things I love more than hair, and one of those things is definitely MUSIC - the most powerful, moving (I believe) form of communication. Music speaks to me at all moments - when I'm sad, I throw on a little Jeff Buckle; when im upset, bring out my Fiona Apple or Rage Against the Machine; when im feeling romantic, nothing is better than a little Chris Isaak; when i want to dance, bring out that Chromeo or Chk Chk Chk!!! There isnt a situation, emotion, or event music cannot express for me.

Right now is an exciting time in music! With an influx of what I'm sad to say are performers and not musicians, we are often presented with only generic, although entertaining and foot tapping, music. I long for depth, meaning, and passion in my music. So from my computer to your eyes, and hopefully to your ears, I will be sharing amazing music i find. And believe me there is a lot out there.

This week my new obsession is PASSION PIT, an electropop band from CambridgeMassachusetts. Passion Pit formed in 2007 after Michalel Angelakos wrote and performed a solo album - originally a belated valentines gift for his then girlfriend - and was approached by the other four future members. Magic was born.

This is my favorite track from the 2009 album "Manners." It's titled, "The Reeling." ENJOY,  and see you next week with another music post!

"Music is moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and charm and gaiety to life and to everything"
-Plato

November Art at Work: Artist Spotlight

Lorraine Toler is a Korean-American painter. Lorraine grew up in Tacoma and has raised her family here.

When Lorraine's mother, Kim Okchun, was twelve-years old, she and her younger brother were sent away from their family farm in North Korea. During their journey south, Lorraine's mother and her younger brother separated. Her mother made it safely to South Korea. Kim eventually met and married Lorraine's father an American soldier stationed in Korea, but she came to the marriage without physical evidence of her past, she had no pictures, no letters, and no family, only memory.  Her stories stayed with Lorraine, and on the ten-year anniversary of Kim's death Lorraine made the decision to try and create something tangible that would serve to honor her mother and her stories.
Lorraine has touched a nerve with many generations of Koreans and many elderly American veterans residing here in the Northwest. Lorraine is interested in Korea’s history, in particular the women of Korea and how the Japanese occupation impacted them. It is Lorraine's goal to educate and inspire conversation about a history that is virtually unknown.  She puts a human face on historical events and honors her mother and others like her.
Lorraine's studio is on this weekend's Art Bus tour. Her studio is in the Jet Building, 1901 South Jefferson, across from The Swiss.

Warming up November: Art at Work

Get excited! It's November, and here in Tacoma that means Art at Work.

Through the month we'll bring you pieces on local artists who are part of this fabulous event. Today's piece we're pleased to present one of our clients.
Jennevieve Schlemmer, a Tacoma resident for eight years, can't remember when she didn't want to be an artist. She received a degree in scuplting 11 years ago; her current medium is wool. Jennevieve says she works with wool because it is sustainable, eco-friendly. She states the only thing that holds her back from creating anything she wants with wool is her own creativity.

Jennevieve is based out of Tacoma Art Place for the Art at Work month. After that, she can be found in her home studio. She'll be teaching 2 felting classes at TAP for the tour and will also be doing felting demos during the studio tours. Inspiration in Print ... on Paper!

When I got home from work the other day, a gigantic magazine caught my eye on the coffee table. "Ooh, what's that"? I asked Cory. "Want me to recycle it so you don't get tempted"? he asked. "No way, I want to go to there"! I said in my best Tina Fey. He, of course, thought it would give me heartache to see the all the amazing things that are so NOT happening budget wise! But for me it was "work". I had to pinch myself upon realizing as a hairdresser, it is part of my job to stay abreast of current trends. My favorite way is to get completely lost in a magazine. AND as much as I love what the internet has to offer, I will always love print ... on paper! I prefer a magazine to a screen, a book to a kindle, a journal to a keyboard; I truly love paper! So imagine my thrill at seeing the magazine on my coffee table was the first ever issue of style.com/print. I love the website for the most current information on fashion shows, models, designers, parties ... a fashionista's encyclopedia! I felt honored to be included in the distribution for the maiden issue. It did not disappoint, packed full of inspiration, top 10 lists and swoon worthy images from fashion's finest. The daymakers at Embellish are planning a Spring 2012 trends meeting and this beautiful magazine will be key in helping us! Meanwhile I will bring it to the salon for all to see or you can order your own copy here. Come see quick before we cut into it! xoxo-Eleanor

Daymaking

We love our clients! They make our days. Getting messages like the one below is the cherry on top! We love making your day!

I had the privilege of visiting Embellish for the first time a couple weeks ago and I must say I was very satisfied. I met Eleanor for the first time for a hair cut and I have to say....I love the cut! I have been going to the same person for past 6 yrs and even though I really like her I have never been this happy with a cut...Thanks Eleanor and to the person @ the salon that thought we would be a good match. Next up....the color...yeaaaaaaa!
Thanks again.
