Two Donations in One Day!!

Yesterday was an exceptionally giving day. Both Sarah and Emily donated over a foot each of hair to Locks of Love!!! With hair growing at the average length of 3/4 of an inch every 28 days, these gals lost years worth of brushing, shampooing and refraining from chemical services to be able to give very healthy donations to kids who could use the amazing wigs that their hair will be made into.

As a salon, we are more than happy to assist you with your donation. All you have to do is show up, brave the loss of hair and leave a happy customer. We take care of the packaging a delivery of the hair so after you fabulous Embellish-ment, you have nothing more to worry about besides making sure you have all the tools you need to style your new do.

Cut Your Drying Time By 30%!!

A fabulous new addition to Davines' Essentials line, the Melu Family has been flying off the shelves nation wide. At times items were on back order for quite some time leaving clients jonesing for a lil' Melu lovin'!!!

Well, Davines has done their research and has finally figured out just how much to manufacture to keep fans of Melu well stocked and smiling. With it's rejuvination properties as well as its ability to cut drying time down as much as 30%, it's no wonder we had troubles keeping it stocked when it was first introduced.

Though designed for long or damaged hair, we've found that even clients who aren't in dire need for rejuvination or the smooth, sleek finish that Melu provides have been picking this product up simply because it's AWESOME!! Not only does it provide a copious amount of vitamins and minerals but is also provides heat protection as well. You could say that this is a good, all around grouping of products for those who want healthy, beautiful hair that can withstand the challenges we pit against our hair on a daily basis.

If you're interested in hearing more about this line, your favorite Daymaker will be more than willing to share the good word as well as recommend a product or two in this family that would best work with your hair's needs.

In this Family (pictured above) : Melu Shampoo, Melu Conditioner, Melu Shield Spray, Melu Serum

Winter Trends from Behind the Chair

Top Hair Trends for Winter and How to Get Them

By: Angie Manson

Winter hair is particularly challenging. Even though your clients will be bundled up in knit caps, warm scarves and wool coats, they’ll rely on you to create looks that are not only on-trend and fresh, but can hold up to all of those strand-stressing cold-weather layers. Here, top celebrity and editorial stylists break down all the top cut and color trends for winter, plus tips on how to get each look.

What’s Hot: Heavily layered hair, cut to encourage the natural wave, falling just below the collar bone with heavy, chunky bangs

Says who?: Louis Angelo, celebrity stylist, Garren New York and Judy Casey Inc.

You’ve probably seen it on: Denmark model model Freja Beha Erichsen

“Freja Beha Erichsen undisputedly has the most requested, most talked-about hairstyle this season,” says Louis. “What makes this style so refreshing is the length (just above the shoulders) as well as the fringe and natural texture working together. Finally, a style that embraces waves rather than fighting them!” But beware! The look is not for everybody, especially clients who don’t look good with, or aren’t willing to maintain, a heavy fringe.

How to get it: “The most important, key point of this look is to make sure your client has some sort of natural texture,” advises Louis. He says to create a layered cut to encourage natural waves, then enhance them by applying René Furterer Volumea Volumizing Foam to wet hair and blow-drying with a diffuser attachment.

The trend: Rich, lustrous brunette color with natural-looking highlights

According to: Marco Pelusi, celebrity colorist, Marco Pelusi Hair Studio, West Hollywood

As seen on: Model/Actress Carol Alt

“This season is all about ‘easy-does-it’ hair,” says Marco. “A natural, rich brunette with subtle highlights placed off the scalp is right on for winter.” For styling, Marco says that less is more.

Get the look: Grab your large curling irons, folks! Wind large sections of hair around the barrel then break up the curls with your fingers to create flow-y, natural-looking waves. And don’t skimp on the conditioner. “Remind your clients to use a daily leave-in conditioner like Marco™ Color Anti-Frizz Leave-In Conditioner,” he says. “And make sure you offer a deep-conditioning treatment to every client in your chair!”

Trend alert: Full, sexy, free hair—no matter what length—colored in warm tones

Who loves it: Frank Barbosa, celebrity stylist, Frank Antonio Hair and Makeup, Newport, RI

You’ve seen it on: Anne Hathaway in Love and Other Drugs (the long version) and on Abbie Cornish (the short version)

“Hair definitely becomes a gorgeous winter accessory if it’s worn full and sexy under our scarves and hats,” says Frank. “I think we’ll see a lot of big, wintry hair in warm tones to keep us hot under the collar!”

Recreate the trend: For Anne’s style, Frank recommends blow-drying René Furterer Vegetal Sculpting Gel into the hair. Next, wrap hair around a 1-inch curling iron and a ½-inch curling iron, alternating sizes as you move around the head. Make sure you don’t curl the ends! Shake out the curls and it’s ready to be topped off with an adorable knit cap. For Abbie’s full, mid-length bob, blow-dry hair using a round brush and upward movements. “Downward movements will flatten the hair too much,” notes Frank. Allow each section to cool on the brush after heating to lock in the style.

The trend: Short hair and high buns

Who loves it: Jacqueline Bush, celebrity stylist, Exclusive Artists Management

You’ve seen these looks on: Ashlee Simpson, Emma Watson and Janet Jackson (short hair) and Jessica Alba and Sienna Miller (high bun)

“I love Emma’s adorable pixie, Janet’s new short hair and Ashlee’s fresh ‘do,” says Jacqueline. “And the high bun is a great styling option for women with long hair.”

Tips for recreating: The best short cuts are done with a razored texture, and each of these short cuts have round layering. Don’t forget to texturize heavily. “That makes the difference between fresh and modern and ‘soccer mom,’” says Jacqueline. The high bun works best on long hair. First, prep wet strands with René Furterer Vegetal Sculpting Gel then blow dry for volume and bounce. Create a center part then tease the hair at the crown. Leaving a few pieces out around the face, brush hair up into a high ponytail. “It’s okay if the ponytail is not perfect,” she notes. “A slightly undone finish is what makes the look more modern.” The trick to the look is to pin a hair extension “doughnut” at the base of the pony then wrap the pony around the doughnut and pin for added volume and shape. Finish with a small bit of shine pomade and holding spray.

What’s hot for winter: Shiny hair, sleek bobs, and long wavy styles

Cases in point: Christina Ricci, Megan Fox, Uma Thurman

Says who?: Creighton Bowman, celebrity stylist, Exclusive Artists Management

“I find we don't go with any one style these days,” says Creighton. “We change the style and texture with each new season.” Christina is a great example of a celebrity with sleek, shiny, healthy hair, he says, whether she wears it down or up in a slick ponytail, straight and shiny is always the key. “Megan Fox looks great with shiny, highly-styled waves, and Uma Thurman is rocking a sleek, collarbone-grazing bob.”

Recreate the looks: For Christina’s smooth, sleek look, start with blown-out hair using shine-boosting products such as René Furterer Glossing Spray and a flat brush. Create a center part and flat iron the hair. “With this shiny, straight texture you can leave hair down or slick it into a high pony tail,” says Creighton. Megan is working long waves, but instead of a rough beachy texture, she’s opting for blown-out waves with more shine and style. First, blow out the hair with a medium round brush for volume, using René Furterer Volumea Volumizing Foam to add volume. Next, use a large curling iron to create soft waves. Uma’s bob shows off her blond highlights and gives her overall look more drama. This look is all about using your flat iron to create smooth, sleek strands. “Tucking one side behind the ear looks stunning, too!” notes Creighton, who adds that any winter-worthy look isn’t complete without glossy, healthy hair. “Recommend a color gloss to every client, and of course, use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner to help combat harsh winter weather.”

It's Getting Cold!!

We know it goes without saying but it's getting colder therefor it's getting dryer. We have all been feeling the effects of the weather and we love coming up with remedies to take care of your hair and scalp needs.

All hair needs moisture, especially during the dryer, colder months. For some, adding Davines' Momo Fluid or Kevin Murphy's Body Guard to your daily routine is just enough to do the trick. For others, like those that flat iron or color on a regular basis, a more intense option may be just what the hair needs. A Well Being Space treatment can bring your hair back to life with a quick add on to your regular haircut or color service. This week, add on a Well Being Space treatment to you service and as a gift to you, we'll gladly throw it on the books for just 1/2 the cost!! Also, purchase any moisturizing product and receive 15% of your purchase!!

Lately at Embellish we have had the drastic change in seasons on our minds. It's getting colder, hair and skin are getting dryer, low lights and deeper colors are on the rise and we're just down right hunkering down for what some say is going to be a hellish Winter. Fish House.... YUM!!!

Every once in a while, your favorite Daymakers get a craving from some fried fish goodness. Though some of have dabbled in a bit of some good ol' Southern cooking, the craving usually comes about mid-day between clients and none of us are talented enough to fry fish and make days at the same time.... or are we?!?

When these cravings come along, we pool our money together and send a free Daymaker up to MLK to Fish House Cafe. The fish is fried just right and if you're interested in anything besides that we're sure the other dishes are good too.... To be honest we haven't really tried anything else because the fish is JUST THAT GOOD!! Also, we don't want to forget to mention that each and every time we've made our way up the hill for these tasty morsels of fish, they have always given us the best service. We love the Fish House Cafe!!!

Save The Date!!! Shift Happens!!

Small business owners and Tacomans alike should mark your calendars for January 31st!! The salon is all a buzz with talk of Go Local happenings and how could we not be with "Shift Happening" coming soon after the beginning of next year?!? I know it's kind of early to be thinking about 2011 because we haven't even made it past Halloween, Turkey Day, Black Friday or any of our Winter celebrations but it's creeping up on us whether we like it or not!!

Shift Happens is an event designed to celebrate local independent businesses and bring awareness of local business' roll in sustainability in our community. The day will unfold with a set of speakers on sustainability in business called "Be Green South Sound" peeling back to a Pecha Kucha segment about WASTE then peeling further into Go Local's Biz Fair and Key Note Speaker Event. Go Local will be partnering with City of Tacoma Office of Sustainability, Business Examiner, Tacoma ACTS & Pecha Kucha.

Exciting announcements will happen on that day so be sure to keep your eye out for more information!!

A New Way to Meld!!

Trish, on one of her many journeys around this greater Northwest area happened upon a new technique while teaching a class in Bellingham. On of the young ladies she was holding a class for displayed a unique way of successfully melding with a better result than techniques used in the past. More excited that ever to bring her what she learned back to the girls at the salon, we set aside some time yesterday to all learn this new and interesting pathway to a beautiful end result.

Step One: Find a willing and ready model. Luckily for us, Roxi (pictured below) came to Trish with the picture to the left hoping that we would be able to accomplish this look. With a meld of coppers, reds and golds, we were excited to take the challenge on!!

Step 2: Pick the colors we need to get the job done and find decided which route for application would be the best to get where we're going.

Step 3: Prep the hair by backcombing the heck out of all of it. We know it looks weird BUT when you see what this accomplishes there will be now questions concerning this madness you see to the left!!

Step 4: Apply the different colors according to where the color will fall once combed out and dried.

Step 5: Rinse, comb out, blowdry and stand back in awe!!!!

This new technique of melding is a great way to create dimension and the "grown out" look that a lot of people are looking for. It's an instant way to create the look that normally would take months of grow out to accomplish. The back combing craziness guarantees a diffused and beautiful transition that is hard to accomplish by simply painting the color on and hoping for the best.

We are all excited to recreate this look using different colors and different patterns of application. Another education down allowing your Daymakers to have more trick to pull out of their repertoire!!

Thanks a bunch to Roxi for being such a fantastic model!!

Flowing With The Brunette Trends....

We've noticed that the Fall trend of going darker is starting to pick up. The leaves are turning colors and so are the hairs on our client's heads!!! Just yesterday we had two long time clients try a little something new and took their normally golden blonde locks to a darker more sultry look. Despite the fact that each of these clients have different hair types and needs, they were both very successfully able to reach the level of brunette that they were both looking for.

When using Davines color to take it down a few levels of color, we have quite a few options. Depending on the goal of the client whether it be permanent, demi-permanent or semi-permanent, Davines has all of its bases covered.
Mask Color is Davines' permanent option. You may have heard us rave about the benefits of using this color line over any other because of the simple fact that Mask color has the ability to leave your hair feeling healthier that when you walked in. Infused with hydrolized milk protiens and conditioning agents that negate the negative affects of coloring your hair, you're guatanteed to leave with healthier looking, shiny locks of georgous brown hair!!

Blessed with the healing properties of Argenine (also found in wheat grass), Mask Light is Davines' answer to someone who's not ready to commit to parmanent color but wants color that will last through more shampoos than a semi-permanent. With a color molecule that is larger than Mask color, the larger molecule sits in the outisde layer of the cuticle until it eventually falls off the hair. This means that you're back to what you started with within 6-8 weeks and also means that there's less of a line of demarkation which equals less evidence of the color your favorite Daymaker artfully painted on your head.

Semi-permanent color is a fantastic option to experiment with color without making a commitment. Finest Pigments is Davines' newest addition to their color line and has been a great option for those that aren't quite ready to commit or just want to play with color options without having to eventually remove the color from the hair. Finest Pigments is also an all natural option that does not include any metallic salts like henna or Hair For Men which leaves a deposit on the hair that can often times have a negative effect when choosing to make a change to your color. It's also great for those that can't use permanent color due to pregnancy, medications, medical treatments or any other situation that would render you powerless against the color gods.

Let's not forget....

Making the commitment, or non-commitment for that matter, to being a brunette doesn't mean you have to be the darkest of dark colors. There are a wide variety of colors with in each Davines line making the choice to deepen your do a little more interesting. There are wide range of colors within color levels that allow your hues to don the colors of the warm reflections of a chestnut or cool it down to be more of a sulty sandy blonde. We have the ability within Davines to work witha varitey of reflections that are customizable to the wants of each clients. Have no fear, your aptly trained Daymakers are ready to make sure you leave with a color that you most desire.

Also, going darker doesn't always mean that you have to paint the whole head brunette. A lot of our clients like to throw in lowlights as the days get cooler to match the trends of our weather. Any of your favorite Daymakers are aptly equiped to artfully place lowlights in using any of our three color options to take your do down a few levels down to the dark side.

We offer any of our clients, previoulsy Embellish-ed or not, a free consultation so feel free to ask for a little extra time to sit down with your favorite Daymaker to discuss what your options and needs are. We would love to take that time with you to make sure you leave with the color of your dreams. Also, it's always helpful to bring pics. This way we're able to better pin point exactly what it is you want and have a point of reference.

If making your day means changing your color, we are more than excited to take you to whatever level it is you desire. We SO look forward to making your day!!!!

4 Years and Still Going Strong!!

The beginning of this month marked the 4 year mark of Embellish's journey in this building. We've Embellish-ed quite a few heads in this space and can't wait to Embellish that many more. We've been blessed with the greatest clientele in Tacoma and we are always more than happy to make your day, whether it be color, cut or just a quick eyebrow wax!!

Despite the signature purple that makes our building so unique, there have been many changes. With the  graffiti change on the outside, change in faces on the inside ant the addition of two fantastic business below us we have seen time do what it does best. The most gratifying is the fact that no matter how stormy the weather, this purple building will stand tall throughout and so will the continual energy of love growth and happiness!!

We haven't quite decided how to celebrate since we just got back from a fabulous trip and our style night was party enough for some time but I'm sure we'll find some way to make this month a special one for us and you alike!! Thank you for 4 fantastic years in this beautiful purple KICK ASS building!!!

Purple Passion for Lingerie Pics!!!

Check out the photo album (to your right on the side bar) showcasing the hair Heather and Susan did for the Purple Passion for Lingerie fashion show. Purple Passion for Lingerie was a benefit for the non-profit group Beauty Empower, which supports women who have been victimized by empowering them from the inside out. The ladies chosen to walk the runway donned apparel and lingerie provided by Vixens House of Shoes and Apparel, was hosted by former KUBE 93 radio personality Tari Free and was held at Surreal Ultra Lounge this past Friday. Susan and Heather had a really good time and, if we don't say so ourselves, the hair looked GREAT!!!! We can't wait to team up with some more local fashion shows!!

October.... A Month Filled With Fun!!!

This month is proving to be a busy month for all of us Daymakers. We've got a lot of collaborations going on this month and we're equally excited for all of them!!
This month we are teaming up with United Way of Pierce County and also other local businesses in the area to help "save the tatas"!! What this means is the when you book an appointment during the month of October, you can choose to donate 10% of your service to either save some tatas or United Way of Pierce County. Either way, you contribution will be greatly appreciated by not only us, but each of the organizations.

This past weekend proved to be one full of creativity and just plain old fun!! This past Friday Heather and Susan coiffed some dos at the Purple Passion for Lingerie  fashion show at Surreal Ultra Lounge. They rocked out some pretty amazing hair and did so in record time. It is indescribable how fun it is to do back stage work!! They had so much fun!! Then as an entire team, we traipsed our way down to Portland where we helped a good friend of Trish prep models for the debut of his new collection, "Shop Girl". We pinned and curled, blowdried and straightened and were glad to see the fruits of our labor glide down the stairs of the Narccisses shop floor. Thank you to David Scott of National Beauty for having us down and making it such an enjoyable trip. Pictures of both will be up soon!!!

The Beginning of Something Great!!

First and foremost we'd like to thank all that attended "A Night of Style at Embellish" this past Thursday. The energy building up to it was very exciting and we it was good to see everyone enjoy the fruits of our planning labor. Thank you also to Joshua Comer, Villa Imbibery and Cafe, Mad Hat Tea and all those involved in helping provide goodies for our gift bags and helped make this night a success by providing us with support. There's no way to thank you enough!!

What you may not know is we held this night as almost a test run. This night was designed not only to provide our fabulous clients with a night to show our appreciation but we also wanted to see if we could pull off a fabulous event that our clients would love to come to and would like to see happen in the future. According to the feedback from some of our guests, this could mean that we will be planning more style nights in the future. The idea would be to focus these nights around specific needs of our clients, this past one providing tips for a good base to your style as well as some quick how-tos on how to go from day to night with your look in minutes. We'd like some feedback as far as what you would like to see happen on a style night. Would you like to focus a night on tips on how to do a good blow out at home? How about a night dedicated to product usage? What about a question and answer night? What would you like our next style night to look like?

Tonight Will Be A Night of Style

In case you haven't heard, tonight is the night where we celebrate the awesome-ness that is YOU!!! We have been slaving away over the planning in between haircuts and foils to make sure this is a night to remember. Your favorite Daymakers will be sharing their love for hair and style knowledge as well as basking in the glow of the inherent amazing light that shines out of each one of you. For those unable to make it tonight, you will be here in spirit. We appreciate every last person who has walked through our doors and have blessed us with their energy and this is one small way that we can show you just how much we love ya!! Be aware... there may be hugs but we're not making any promises but rest assured that you will leave with not only gift bags filled with goodies but new style tips and tricks easy enough for you to take home and use every day or on a special occasion.

Thank you all for just being you!!!

Cool T-Shirts To Raise Money

Our very own Daymaker, Heather Scott, took some time last night at Grant Center for the Expressive Arts' PTA night to help her daughter's teacher, Ms. Sand, revamp the design of the spirit shirt for this year. This shirt's design is likely to be seen on all of the awesome kids that walk the halls of the elementary as well as all of the super cool parents and teachers who are inspiring our nation's future to be, well, artists!! This shirt is also a way for the elementary to raise funds for the PTA to help provide funds for more enrichment programs as well as super fun after school activities. The final design is still in the works but we know that with Heather's creative eye and with the help of all others involved it's going to be a great t-shirt that everyone would be proud to wear!!

With a deadline of Oct. 4th, Heather could use your help with suggestions on how to make the t-shirt SUPER awesome. Your input would help so feel free to leave a comment here if you've got some input or would like to get more information on how you can purchase one for yourself.
