Spring Trends of the Tacoma Types

How do you know Spring is here in Tacoma? Well, besides blooming cherry blossom trees and the seemingly bi-polar weather patterns with spots of sunshine, rain, hail or all three at the same time, there are always a few tell-tale signs that let us know that April showers will soon bring May flowers.

Flip Flops in the Rain
It never fails, the ladies see a glimmer of sun and the flips flops come out in full force!! It doesn't matter if it's pouring rain outside, if it's Spring we're wearing the one pair of many flip flops that matches our outfit of the day. Although the weather has warmed a little and there's no fear of frostbite, if we say our toes aren't cold, we're lying... they ARE cold. Who can deny a girl the opportunity to match her most comfortable accessory when we typically only get about 3 months out of the year to do so?!?

Convertible Tops Down With the Driver in a Heavy Coat and Sunglasses
You know you've seen it and you quite possibly have done it. We don't blame you for taking advantage of the sunshine. If you get weird looks, it's not because we think you're crazy.... we're just jealous!!

Lighter and Vibrant Colors in Clothing
Flower prints, pastels and tank tops OH MY!!! Pantone named turquoise as the color of the year. They have, as well, interviewed top fashion designers and named the Spring color trends of 2010. If you take a gander at the top of this post, you'll see that the trend has moved away from the brash jewel tones of the past and are venturing toward a still bright and vibrant but more subdued color trend. These beautiful colors have been pegged as the colors fashion designers intend to use in their Spring fashion lines so if you haven't seen them gracing the racks of your favorite boutiques, you are sure to see them soon. We at Embellish can't wait to venture to some of our favorite shops and sift through the racks of vintage or otherwise keeping in mind colors like Aurora and Dried Herd.

Recyling at Its Finest and Most Elegant

re-Furniture....Furniture that is elegant, hand built, functional, beautiful and made from recycled and reclaimed wood. Literally, this is one of the most beautiful ways one can witness art made from recycled and re-purposed. materials. Steve Lawler is a local artistic genious. He's takes a material that most would cover up in some fashion and creates sustainable, functional and earth friendly works of art. It took every fiber of Trish and Susan not to pounce on purchasing some the art that he showed at Pecha Kucha last week. What an amazing way to turn "one man's trash" into "another man's treasure". Check out Steve's Website and see more of his work and try your best not to fall in love with it like a few or us Embellish gals have!!

April Showers Bring April Frizz!!

It's that time of year when your hair, no matter what you seem to do or how hard you work at it, won't keep it's same silky smooth look. This is largely due to the giant amounts of moisture we have in our fantastic Washington air but also due to what we love to refer to as liquid rain. Oh how we LOVE the rain!! If you want help keep the frizz at bay, here are 3 key things you can do to keep that fuzzy monster from rearing it's ugly head. 1. Moisturize 2. Moisturize some more and 3. Moisturize one last time for good measure!!

You may have heard your favorite Daymaker compare your hair to a sponge and here's the theory behind that: If you throw a dry sponge into the sink it fills up with water and sinks to the bottom of the basin. On the other hand, if you wet a sponge and throw it into the sink it floats on the top even if you squeeze all the water out. What we're trying to accomplish when it comes to hair is filling the hair with moisture so it floats. When a sponge or the hair is full of moisture, it has no need to fill itself up with whatever moisture it can find. In hair's case the moisture it's most likely to find is in the air.

How do you moisturize your hair so that you don't end up looking like a crazed animal? Your 3 best bets are a good moisturizing shampoo, conditioner and a styling product designed specifically to moisturize the hair. Taking these steps and flooding the hair with moisture is your hairs best defense against humidity and moisture in the air. In order to aid you in your moisturizing needs we're offering you a fantastic deal in each line that Embellish carries.

Davines
Purchase Momo Shampoo and Momo Conditioner at regular price and add on your choice of either Momo Fluid or Momo Curl Serum for $5.

Kevin Murphy
Pick up Hydrate Me Shampoo and Hydrate Me Conditioner at regular price and add Body Guard to your purchase for $5.

Sashajuan
Dry Hair Shampoo and Dry Hair Conditioner are a great combo to fight frizz. Make your purchase complete with Straight Out Gel for only $5.

Be sure to ask your favorite Daymaker which one will work best for the look you're trying to accomplish and we'll be sure to discuss the best route for you to take.

This offer is only good through the end of the month of April so take the time to stop on by and take care of your hair's moisture needs!!

The Many Faces of Jessica Alexander

Last night, Trish and Susan had the pleasure of seeing Jessica Alexander present at Tacoma's most recent installment of Pecha Kucha, an open mic forum for designers and artists to meet, network and show their work in public. The premise behind this presentation format is a simple idea: 20 slides x 20seconds. Though it may seem like a short period of time, this keeps the presenter concise and keeps the momentum of the presentation going allowing the audience to grasp the meat of the concept. She showcased her passion for both jewelry making and real estate focusing on her love for exotic stones and her dedication to being an EcoBroker. She is the personification of the word "multitasker" in that she has her feet both aspects of her businesses as well being an active member of the Tacoma community which includes but is by no means limited to being a member of Tacoma's Go Local. She is the prime example of being forthright in your decision to not give up one passion for another. What an amazing and talented Tacoman!!

If you haven't been to Orange on Broadway, you are missing out on a unique shopping experience. With a focus on "retro resale", you're bound to find some pretty interesting finds from vintage wool sweaters to a beautifully crafted 1960s jumpsuit. There are also some newer pieces that you might not consider completely "vintage" but, Orange on Broadway really focuses on making new fashion (which if you haven't noticed, vintage is the new "new") affordable.

There's also a definite attention to detail, which we at Embellish love, that not many shops offer to as little as arranging the racks by color and even in the little orange slices as tags, on the retail bags and even on the tiny paper jewelry bags. So if you're in the downtown area near Sanford and Son, take a minute and peruse through the racks and jewelry cases. We guarantee you will not be disappointed and you will most likely leave with a bag full of goodies as a few of our Daymakers have!!!

Making It Earth Day Every Day

With the growing interest in going green, we've been steadily making efforts to make our salon as Earth friendly as possible. Also, with Earth Day right around the corner on the 22nd we'd like to let you know what we're doing to make our planet a beautiful place to live.

In an effort to save paper, you may have noticed that we have laminated "New Client Forms". This, coupled with wet erase markers has drastically reduced our paper use. We are looking to implement a new system that will allow us to do the same with our "work tickets". We have also had talks about ways to reduce our use of trash liners, purchasing greener light fixtures and will soon be making efforts to recycle our foils and even donate hair clippings to help clean up oil spills.

If you've visited the salon lately, you'll notice that our display in Well Being Space has changed to a beautiful display arranged by Trish. She reused a couple of Davines Essential bottles and filled them with an assortment of edible goodies to showcase the bottles ability to safely store food. The Essentials bottles are made used food grade plastic, therefore once they've been emptied and washed they are perfect for throwing in your lunch bag for work or using around the kitchen to store various food items. Also, you are more than welcome to refill your Essentials shampoo and conditioner containers at the salon instead of buying an entirely new one and we will give you the gift of $5 off the price it would cost you to buy a new bottle. We also, end up with a lot of our back bar and liter bottles stacking up in our back room. We've moved to using them for things around the salon and would like to offer you the opportunity to have some for yourself, free of cost. We've got a few left over so if you would like them, feel free to come by and pick them up!!

A lot of companies are making the effort to supply cloth shopping bags with the incentive that it will help save the earth by reducing the use of paper or plastic bags. Well, we now have cloth bags that we are simply adorable and come with an added incentive of 10% off your future product purchases. There are two ways for you to receive this bag. You can either purchase the bag for $5 or if you spend $50 on product, you receive the bag as our gift to you. From then on, anytime you bring the bag back with you, we will give you 10% off your product purchases for helping us be as green as possible.

Now, with all the efforts we're making to green up the salon it would only seem right to help celebrate Earth Day with a deal on your color service. As you know, we can end up going through a lot of foils in one day. In an effort to reduce the use of foils, we would like to offer you the gift of 10% off a bolayage service booked on Earth Day, April 22nd. This is a European hand painted highlight technique that uses no foils at all. This is a fantastic promotion that not only helps our green efforts but will also be a fantastic way to lighten up your hair for the coming warmer season!!

Just a reminder, the "Relief and Relaxation" promo is good through tomorrow the 17th so call and book your service with complimentary scalp massage and your gift of 15% off a service!!

Also, stay tuned for the announcement of our Mother's Day promotion!!

Davines' For Wizards is the perfect line of finishing product to help complete your desired look as it was designed with the artist in mind. Ask Eleanor about #4 Glossy Modeling Putty or Trish about #2 Mat Moulding Gesso and you'll hear them rave about these brushes, what they do and why they love to pick them up. For Wizards is a fantastic set of tools for making your do a awe inspiring work of art.

We're All Back and Ready To Do Some Learnin'!!!

If you've tried within the last week to book an appointment with any of 3-4 of us Daymakers, you may have hit a roadblock or two as a few of us were off on adventures outside of Embellish and far from Tacoma. Susan left for a quick trip to see Muse and jet off to Vegas, Trish explored vortexes and cacti in Arizona, Thom trekked through Montana via Subaru and Jessica spent the last week in Vegas as well!!!

As of today, we're all back and refreshed after taking a few "me days" and have jumped right back into our education routine. We took the time to apply some of our newly absorbed color knowledge..... on ourselves!! We're so excited to try these new color techniques that we HAD to try them on ourselves first!! We're also kicking off some of our short hair classes and used Eleanor as a model today.

Thom, with his years of experience working with Bumble and Bumble and doing backstage work at fashion shows, has been passing along what he's learned over the years to all of your favorite Daymakers. Today we focused on the ever coveted, fun and funky pixie. This is a look that can be as conservative or as sassy as you want to make it and what better model to use than our copper headed Daymaker Eleanor. She's got the perfect bone structure and striking features that make this short haircut turn heads!! He covered different techniques using the razor or the shear and we'll be apply his added tidbits to our hands on class next Tuesday.

As much as we love doing each other's hair, we'd really like to perfect our technical skills with the help of our clients as models. We still have some open dates so email us if you're interested in changing your look or refining your do!!

He's Back to Black!!

If your remember back to our February 25th post, "Mitch Makes Good on a Promise" we had a couple videos of Mitch Robinson's, of Tacoma's Click! Cable TV Network, "purple-izing" process. He promised his employees 3 1/2 years ago that if they met a certain sales goal that he would color his hair "Click Purple". To his delight and slight dismay they did just that after which he immediately contacted Trish to get his plan into action.

Mitch came into Embellish on the 25th anxious and full of hair questions like "How long with the purple last?" and "Will I be able to go back to my normal hair color?" We assured him that we'd be able to take him back to his normal self after he made good on his bet. We also had to reassure his apprehensive and slightly frightened son that we'd make his dad "normal" again once he was ready to take that step.

When he came back to us a mere 3 weeks later, he had a few stories to tell. His son eventually adapted to his purple headed father's new look and Mitch became accustomed to repeating the employee inspiring story that made his vibrant locks make sense. He sometimes forgot why he was getting strange looks and then smiled when he realized why. He shared with us that most of his employees and coworkers didn't believe he would do it and were shocked and pleased when he did. He also gained a little "street cred" with some of the tech team who normally don't have more than 2 words to say to him, some of which shared heart felt stories of camaraderie that this simple act of solidarity reminded them of and even choked a few up.

Mitch went into this with the hopes of inspiring his employees not realizing what doors it would open up. He not only showed extreme integrity but put a smile on a few people's faces making himself more accessible to those who may not normally be inclined to be open up otherwise. I think we all learned that purple hair along with a good story has more power than we would have ever believed. Thanks, Mitch, for allowing us to be a part of this experience!!
