Punk rock hip hop dont stop!
Helloooo music lovers! Have i got a tasty treat for you. Punk rock music with a dash of swag. Kentrell "Krispy" Lindsey and Alvin "Joey" Lindsey, brothers based in New Orleans, Louisiana, are The Knux. They are known for amazing and intense live shows, as well as outrageously funny and real interviews.
These two punk rock savants sing, rap and produce. Starting off writing beats and lyrics they hooked up with a local producer and hit the studio. Originally called The Knuckle Heads, the duo moved to LA after being displaced from their home due to Hurricane Katrina.
They caught a break opening up for Common on his "Finding Futures Tour." Crowds didn't know how to take this beautiful anomally. Despite all of that, the duo was signed to Interscope and were featured on "Entourage" as well as "Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanomo Bay." Releasing "Remind Me in 3 Days" in 2008 and then touring extensively in 2009. They hit the studio in 2010 to create "Eraser" - that finally hit heads in 2011. Del Brown and I had the immense pleasure of meeting this wildly fun, insightful, and gorgeous duo, and a night of laughs, crushes, Dave Chapelle impressions, music appreciation, and jacket pin exchanges ensued.
I hope you enjoy one of my favorite tracks from The Knux....this one is called "Shes So Up"

Time for the Weekend in the 253
Don't know about anyone else, but it's been a long week! The Weekly Volcano has put together today's list of 5 Things to Do, and I've found the solution for my overworked brain. Take a look. Happy Weekend!
FRIDAY, DEC. 16, 2011 >>>
1. You can hate on the holidays all you want, but there's no denying they bring a wealth of artful yearly traditions. Tacoma Symphony Chorus' take on "Messiah" in St. Charles Borromeo Church fits this bill. As pre-event hype of tonight's event acknowledges, "Chorus Director Geoffrey Boers always brings a fresh take to Handel's beloved work," and there's no reason to expect this year to be any different. Four vocal soloists - soprano Denise Lees, mezzo-soprano Melissa Plagemann, tenor James Brown and Benjamin Harris - will join Tacoma Symphony Chorus and Orchestra, creating an event that's almost to put the whole family in the spirit. Find more info here.
2. Check out the 'Tis The Season Holiday Benefit Show this afternoon at the Mandolin Café in Tacoma, featuring an awesome collection of musical talent: James Coates, Gina Belliveau, Kurt Lindsay, Nick Sandy, Denny Foreman and Megan Biegalski. The fun is all ages and kicks off at 6 p.m.
3. Have you been to the Crystal Saloon in Enumclaw yet? To be honest, neither have we. But, if anything is going to intrigue us into going it might be DJ Dirty White, who - according to hype - will be spinning rock, hip-hop, top 40 and dance hits all night long. We repeat: DJ Dirty White is in Enumclaw tonight at the Crystal Saloon. That is all.
4. It's a good night for comedy in Tacoma as comedian Andy Woodhull is at the Tacoma Comedy Club and Harold Gomez is at the Grit City Comedy Club.
5. Throw up your devil horns and pound a few beers with I Defy tonight at Hell's Kitchen.

New music obsession....Calvin Harris is always Ready For The Weekend!
There is nothing better to me than club thumping stylistic disco that brings up visions of pulling out that amazing outfit, putting it on, and hitting the town with a ferocity that could scare panthers in the jungle! If there was a soundtrack to this vision, it would be Calvin Harris!
Born in Dumfries,Scotland, Harris was attracted to electronic music in his teens and began recording demos in his bedroom studio in 1999. Becoming a bit antisocial during the process of creating his dream, he got his first solid break in 2002 when Prima Facie Label released two of his tracks, "Da Bongos" and "Brighter Days". In 2006 Harris signed with EMI and Sony BMG after being discovered on Myspace. Harris' career is a flurry of soap opera like interactions with many top artists including Lady GaGa, Katy Perry and Kelis, but through everything Harris has managed to still produce, DJ, and create some of the most amazing music to hit the electronic scene in years.
So, I urge you to pop onto your spotify, MySpace, or Facebook and become acquainted with this amazingly fun, discotastic musical genius. I know you wont be disappointed!
Enjoy my favorite track "Merrymaking At My Place"

FRIENDS.....new NY band obsession
Like a little indie mixed in with your hip hop and a dash of sexy?? Then you will love new band obsession, via my bff - thank you Del Brown. FRIENDS is a band from Brooklyn, NY. Some smooth, sassy lyrics from one of my favorite tracks, "Im His Girl" read: "If you see me walkin around with him I'm not just some girl he picked up, Im....his......girl." Following in the sultry indie rap styles of girls like Lykke ly and Kreyshawn, this band is headed-up by two up and coming style icons - Samantha Urbani and Lesley Hann.
Originally named Perpetual Crush, the two leading ladies have been friends since Second grade and only last spring got together after Urbani began recording some casual tracks on her computer. After an impromptu jam session FRIENDS was born. Check out the video and keep an eye out for a album. It's taking a while due to an intense bidding war for the bands EP. Hope you love it - I know I do!

Tie a Knot in It
I am falling in love with scarves. Not only are they adorable, but they keep your neck warm! I get bored with the standard ways to wear them though, so when I saw this step-by-step guide from whowhatwear.com on scarf tying, I literally squealed with delight.
There are five, very adorable, ways to wear a scarf. Here's the link for the guide: http://www.whowhatwear.com/website/slideshow-story/ways-to-style-1/
Now, if you'll excuse me, I have some scarves to dig out of the closet!

Dance takedown with Friendly Fires
My spotify, cd player, and YouTube have been abuzz with my new music obsession -- FRIENDLY FIRES, electronic dance funk shoegaze. You can dance to these tracks as well as relate to the prolific lyrics. In one of my favorite tracks, "Skeleton Boy," Ed McFarlane writes about a break up, keeping the good memories, and leaving the bad relationship.
"your too much , i take it that we're over, or should we even care at all, you're too much lets shake hands and say goodbye, your love is out believing despite the loss, give me your hand lets face this night and see it through"
Meeting in the year 1989, the UK trio Ed McFarlane, Jack Savidge, and Edd Gibson began as a hardcore punk cover band, staying together until university and taking a break. They reunited after graduating and rose to become chart toppers with TV perfomances on some of UKs top channels. A large break happened for the band when they were featured on Ninetendo and Playstation games in 2007. In 2008 the band finally released their self titled album and magic was made readily available to the masses!!
I love this band, their energy, beats, and lyrics -- it's meaningful, beautiful, and dancetastic all at the same time.
I hope you enjoy these guys as much as I do. Do yourself a huge musical favor and find Friendly Fires on Spotify, Google or YouTube -- delve into some more tracks (Lovesick being a HUUGGGE suggestion lol) I think you will be very pleased.

Invest in Yourself
Taking time for yourself is vital. We all try to find time to give back to ourself, whether it is a quiet night with a good book or time with friends and family. As the holidays gear up, finding this time is harder and more important.
One of the ways to give something to yourself everyday is giving yourself the products to make your skin and hair feel fabulous. Davines has the way to do that.
Whether it's the Authentic Replenishing line for face, hair and body of one or the many products for caring for and styling hair, Davines has something for you. Which products do you use? We want to know!
So, this week - take a picture of your products and share it here or on our Facebook wall. At the end of the week we'll have a random drawing, with the winner receiving a $25 gift certificate to El Gaucho.

HOLY HOLY HOLY....HOLY GHOST!!!
Its New Music Mondays..... This weeks pick is a New York based band called HOLY GHOST! The band was formed in 2007 by childhood best friends Alex Frankel and Nick Millhiser. My best friend, Del Brown, and I recently attended one of their shows in Portland , and met up with Frankel.
Having met him about a year ago, it was a fun reunion; the show was even more amazing. We chatted with Alex about the record especially about our favorite track, "Some Children, " featuring another favorite artist of ours, Michael McDonald (formerly of the doobie brothers.) Alex told a super funny story.
When playing the track for his producer, James Murphy (LCD Soundsystem,) they both thought that they needed someone else to sing the hook, Murphy quickly suggested Justin Timberlake; Frankel snickered to us, took a drink of his glass full of bourbon and said, "I laughed at James while saying, 'If you can get him for it, but dont you think he is a little famous?'" Frankel then suggested McDonald, and they emailed him the track. McDonald replied, "I think I already know what you want me to sing on your track!"
We spent a few more moment with Frankel drinking, laughing, singing, and dancing. HOLY GHOST! A true mix of hip hop , electropop, and funk - with a dash of rock and roll. Check this band out if you wanna dance......REAL HARD

Work Hard - Play Hard
The weekend is here! So many options to choose! The Weekly Volcano has narrowed it down to five epic choices. There's something for every taste. Take a look, pick, and have a great weekend!
1. With an ambitious 10-day lineup spanning the ages of cinema, the Olympia Film Festival literally is something for everyone - of any age. OFF kicks off tonight at 6 p.m. with hors d'oeuvres served by ladies of TUSH! Burlesque, the stage fantastic of Saul Tannenbaum and Mona Van Horne, sparkly dancers and the 1933 film, Gold Diggers of 1933. The Weekly Volcano previews OFF here.
2. We all know Elmo. Even if you don't have kids, will never have kids, in fact hate kids and everything about them, and have never even been a kid yourself, you know who Elmo is ... or at least you think you do. Elmo, of course, is the hug-giving, furry little red dude from Sesame Street - a staple of the last 25 years. In real life, however, Elmo is puppeteer Kevin Clash, who created the character we've come to know and love and has portrayed Elmo on TV since 1985. The award-winning documentaryBeing Elmo: A Puppeteers Journey opens today at The Grand Cinema at 11:45 a.m., 1:40 and 6:20 p.m., allowing the old and young alike a chance to meet the man behind the puppet.
3. Investigative journalist David Barsamian will discuss "Uprisings: From Kashmir to Egypt to Wall Street" at 7:30 p.m. inside the Washington State Labor Council office in downtown Olympia.
4. The fifth Jacobsen Series classical concert hits Schneebeck Concert Hall at 7:30 p.m. with Masterworks for String Quartet. Under the masterful hands of violinist Maria Sampen, violinist Tim Christie, violist Joyce A. Ramée and cellist David Requiro, the audience will hear Ludwig van Beethoven's String Quartet No. 5, Opus 18, Aaron Copland's Two Pieces for String Quartet and Johannes Brahms' String Quartet No. 1 in c minor, Opus 51.
5. The Angels of Mayhem present the Murder Masquerade Ball featuring with Sad Face, The Hardcount, Cityfaire, Angels Of Mayhem Burlesque, DJ Traxx, DJ Berry and Magician Cary Durgin hits Stonegate Pizza at 9 p.m. The party benefits the independent short horror film, The Resolution.

Plaid: It's Not Just Grunge Anymore
Stepping out this morning, the first thing I saw was my breath. These days make me yearn for warm items. I like to turn to plaid. The rich hues and deep colors create a sense of snuggly delight, but I want to stay on trend - I've decided to stop living in the '90s.
The Fall/Winter collections were FULL of plaid. The tartan was turned into sweaters, pants, scarves, and so much more. This year even saw a wrap-around dress made of delicious plum themed plaid. And there were some classically silhouetted dresses perked up by the always fun plaid. And, of course, lovely thick coats to wrap around and ward off the cold winds.
So, while we here in the Pacific Northwest have been famous for our love of all things plaid, we can join with the rest of the world and put a trend-setting, fashion forward spin to it. Check out millionlooks.com for some inspiration.
Take a look in some local shops, Vanity, Megs & Mo, or anyone of the Shopgirls of Tacoma to see what pieces you just need to add to your wardrobe for the season.

Music, Hair, Passion and Fashion!
There are few things I love more than hair, and one of those things is definitely MUSIC - the most powerful, moving (I believe) form of communication. Music speaks to me at all moments - when I'm sad, I throw on a little Jeff Buckle; when im upset, bring out my Fiona Apple or Rage Against the Machine; when im feeling romantic, nothing is better than a little Chris Isaak; when i want to dance, bring out that Chromeo or Chk Chk Chk!!! There isnt a situation, emotion, or event music cannot express for me.
Right now is an exciting time in music! With an influx of what I'm sad to say are performers and not musicians, we are often presented with only generic, although entertaining and foot tapping, music. I long for depth, meaning, and passion in my music. So from my computer to your eyes, and hopefully to your ears, I will be sharing amazing music i find. And believe me there is a lot out there.
This week my new obsession is PASSION PIT, an electropop band from Cambridge, Massachusetts. Passion Pit formed in 2007 after Michalel Angelakos wrote and performed a solo album - originally a belated valentines gift for his then girlfriend - and was approached by the other four future members. Magic was born.
This is my favorite track from the 2009 album "Manners." It's titled, "The Reeling." ENJOY, and see you next week with another music post!

November Art at Work: Artist Spotlight
Lorraine Toler is a Korean-American painter. Lorraine grew up in Tacoma and has raised her family here.
When Lorraine's mother, Kim Okchun, was twelve-years old, she and her younger brother were sent away from their family farm in North Korea. During their journey south, Lorraine's mother and her younger brother separated. Her mother made it safely to South Korea. Kim eventually met and married Lorraine's father an American soldier stationed in Korea, but she came to the marriage without physical evidence of her past, she had no pictures, no letters, and no family, only memory. Her stories stayed with Lorraine, and on the ten-year anniversary of Kim's death Lorraine made the decision to try and create something tangible that would serve to honor her mother and her stories.

Lorraine has touched a nerve with many generations of Koreans and many elderly American veterans residing here in the Northwest. Lorraine is interested in Korea’s history, in particular the women of Korea and how the Japanese occupation impacted them. It is Lorraine's goal to educate and inspire conversation about a history that is virtually unknown. She puts a human face on historical events and honors her mother and others like her.
Lorraine's studio is on this weekend's Art Bus tour. Her studio is in the Jet Building, 1901 South Jefferson, across from The Swiss.

Get excited! It's November, and here in Tacoma that means Art at Work.
Through the month we'll bring you pieces on local artists who are part of this fabulous event. Today's piece we're pleased to present one of our clients.
Jennevieve Schlemmer, a Tacoma resident for eight years, can't remember when she didn't want to be an artist. She received a degree in scuplting 11 years ago; her current medium is wool. Jennevieve says she works with wool because it is sustainable, eco-friendly. She states the only thing that holds her back from creating anything she wants with wool is her own creativity.
Jennevieve is based out of Tacoma Art Place for the Art at Work month. After that, she can be found in her home studio. She'll be teaching 2 felting classes at TAP for the tour and will also be doing felting demos during the studio tours. Here are the places to check out her work and take a class or two.

Inspiration in Print ... on Paper!
When I got home from work the other day, a gigantic magazine caught my eye on the coffee table. "Ooh, what's that"? I asked Cory. "Want me to recycle it so you don't get tempted"? he asked. "No way, I want to go to there"! I said in my best Tina Fey. He, of course, thought it would give me heartache to see the all the amazing things that are so NOT happening budget wise! But for me it was "work". I had to pinch myself upon realizing as a hairdresser, it is part of my job to stay abreast of current trends. My favorite way is to get completely lost in a magazine. AND as much as I love what the internet has to offer, I will always love print ... on paper! I prefer a magazine to a screen, a book to a kindle, a journal to a keyboard; I truly love paper! So imagine my thrill at seeing the magazine on my coffee table was the first ever issue of style.com/print. I love the website for the most current information on fashion shows, models, designers, parties ... a fashionista's encyclopedia! I felt honored to be included in the distribution for the maiden issue. It did not disappoint, packed full of inspiration, top 10 lists and swoon worthy images from fashion's finest. The daymakers at Embellish are planning a Spring 2012 trends meeting and this beautiful magazine will be key in helping us! Meanwhile I will bring it to the salon for all to see or you can order your own copy here. Come see quick before we cut into it! xoxo-Eleanor
Daymaking
We love our clients! They make our days. Getting messages like the one below is the cherry on top! We love making your day! I had the privilege of visiting Embellish for the first time a couple weeks ago and I must say I was very satisfied. I met Eleanor for the first time for a hair cut and I have to say....I love the cut! I have been going to the same person for past 6 yrs and even though I really like her I have never been this happy with a cut...Thanks Eleanor and to the person @ the salon that thought we would be a good match. Next up....the color...yeaaaaaaa! Thanks again. |

6 Looks for Spring '12 that You Can Wear Now
Yes, the days are getting shorter and colder, but there are ways to warm ourself. Ways to keep thinking ahead. According to FASHIONISING.com there are trends set for Spring '12 that we can wrap around now and keep some warmth rolling through the winter.
The runway shows for Spring '12 included looks inspired by historic eras and muses. Check out the mini how-tos for the following six trends.
1. Matte complexion -- The irony of this trend is that to create a timeless look, you need to step away from the trends. This balanced-out skin tone is an inspiration from the 80s and 90s, where a shiny or glossy face was nowhere to be seen.
2. Contoured cheeks -- Napoleon Perdis says, “A high cheek bone with a kiss of peachy pink blush is an epitome of Hollywood glamour. And why wouldn’t you want to look like you’ve just got dressed for the red carpet?”
3. Bare eyed Mascara -- This 60s-Twiggy-inspired, bare-eyed mascara look has taken the celebrity-filled red carpet by its horns and it’s only fair that you include that in your daily ritual too. This trend is all about the lashes, but the secret is to keep them natural; let the eyeliner or eye shadow go on a much-deserved break.
4. Metallic Colours -- To update your look from summer to fall, include accents of warmer hues in your everyday make-up routine. If plums, violets and olive scare you, then opt for metallic shades. A little dust of silver under the eye or a sparkly topcoat of nail lacquer will not make you look like a teenager. Napoleon suggests, “Don’t be scared to add sparkle during the day. If it makes you feel on-trend and fashionable, brave against the boring and dull crowd on the street”.
5. Brows are bold but feminine -- Not sleeky thin or roughly thick, for the next couple of seasons, brows are strict but groomed. This involves a lot of filling, perhaps even growing them out to get optimum results for next year. For now, stay clear from pointed or bushy looks. Napoleon takes runway inspiration for this season from Oscar de la Renta and Donna Karan for this trend.
6.Nude vs. Classic Red -- This cold war between nude and red lips is a never-ending saga. The bright stained lips have had enough publicity, and Napoleon says this fall, the pout needs a warm nude shade.

Five Fabulous Things to do This Weekend
The weatherman says the weekend will be nice, so what to do with this pause in the winter grey? The Weekly Volcano has five fabulous suggestions.
1. Show up at Jazzbones at 8 p.m. and you'll encounter a pulsing, breathing, three-pronged attack of art-meets-music. The gist of this gig won't be much different than the image the name conjures up, combining the mastery of the "violinistextremist" known as Kytami, billed as "perhaps Canada's most diverse and engaging fiddle player," the DJ skills of The Phonograff, a venerable turntable wizard with almost two decades of experience in the game, and reggae-bred mic-master Mista Chatman - mixing the varied ingredients into a sight and sound rarely seen.
2. Sorry fans of Pearl Harbor and The Prime Gig - the Gig Harbor Film Festival doesn't include "Gig" and "Harbor" flicks. Instead, the three-day festival will include today's screenings of Family of the Wa'a (10:25 a.m.), Paint (2:30 p.m.), A Relative Thing (5:45 p.m.), OxyMorons (8:45 p.m.) plus many more that include features, documentaries, shorts, and foreign films at the Galaxy Theatre at Uptown. We have call into the festival folks regarding the rumor that For Whom the Bridge Tolls will screen.
3. This weekend bird lovers from far and wide will flock (get it?) to Tacoma for the 8th annual Bird Lovers' Weekend at the Museum of Glass. Events kick off today with bird-related art activities in the Studio, Oiva Toikka documentary in the Theater, "Birds by Toikka" glass bird-making demonstrations by Tero Välimaa in the Hot Shop and Professor Toikka;s new, limited-edition bird is available for purchase in the Museum Store.
4. Sandra Sunrising Osawa, whose prolific films and television productions tell the stories of contemporary Native Americans, will deliver the keynote speech at the Contemporary Native American Issues in Higher Education symposium at 2 p.m., in Philip Hall on the University of Washington Tacoma campus.
5. Criticizing a poet is like kicking a crippled child in the groin. It's not pretty, and it doesn't solve anything. That's what we love about tonight's Distinguished Writer Series, which hits King's Books at 7 p.m. After the featured poet - Ed Harkness, author of poetry collections Saying the Necessary and Beautiful Passing Lives -you can stand up on stage and let it all hang out during the open mic without a single vegetable whizzing by.

Color.Bug: Funky Color Without the Commitment
Color Bug... What is this new fun tool we are now carrying at Embellish?!? It's a fun and funky way to add color to your do without the long term commitment!! You could think of it as eyeshadow for your hair!! Trish and Eleanor are in love with the orange and Naja loves that she can spice up her do with the purple without having to permanently change her freshly colored locks.
Here's what Kevin Murphy himself has to say about his newest fabulous product:
Here's what Kevin Murphy himself has to say about his newest fabulous product:
In the world of session styling I’m always looking for new ways to change the models hair. Wild crazy colour became the new hot thing but you cant just colour a models hair just because you feel like it. I wanted full on colour but without the commitment! I had had my share of moments where I wanted crazy colour hair on a Friday, but come Monday morning I didn’t want my crazy colour anymore.
I want to be able to put it on and just as easily take it off. I thought to myself why cant hair colour be just as easy as applying make-up? I had been experimenting with pigments since the 80’s obsessed with the powdered wigs of the French Revolution. The influence came from those times but I wanted it to be intense and almost fluro as it is the intense flash of colour that makes it modern. COLOR.BUG is wipe on, wipe off colour! It’s just for fun and just for the one night. With a towel draped around your shoulders to protect your clothes, I would apply a hair product and then the COLOR.BUG to make it stick. The COLOR.BUG adds body to hair, you can keep this raw texture or add a fine mist of hairspray to lock on the colour.
Avaliable in Pink, Purple and Orange

Flamboyage!!!
The internets are all a-buzz with word of the new Flamboyage technique. Davines has just launched this innovative color technique, a twist on the traditional bolayage technique, and news of its awesomeness is spreading like wildfire. Trish and Susan, both Davines educators, will be taking the hands on training soon and will be sharing what they've learned with your team of Daymakers so that each and every one of you will have the opportunity to choose this color adventure!! We can't wait to share this with you!!!
PS- This image above is.... well an image :) If you'd like to learn more about this technique and see the backstage and collection videos, click here. Enjoy!!!

Let's Get.... Nude?!?
Hey, hey now!!! Keep your clothes on!! Ha!!! We're talking about a trend that is so subtly beautiful that it seems to pale in comparison to the sexy red lip trend that has swept its way through Tacoma.... Get it?!? Pale?!?
The nude lip is a super hot trend that is easier to utilize than one might think. No matter the eye or cheek you choose to don night or day, adding a nude lip gloss like those recommended by BellaSugar to your repertoire is a no brainer. It's as easy as adding a perfectly toned lip gloss to your makeup bag or by dabbing your powder foundation over your Bert's Bees. It's so simple, understated and easy to make a part of your every day makeup routine but striking enough to save for a night out on the town.
Finally a trend that celebrates the sun deprived and doesn't require any electronic apparati to achieve!! How PNW!!!
